The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the The engineering mindset
Engineering is the driver behind modern society. Money, funding, legal, marketing and societal expectations are all needed but if it wasn’t for engineers it wouldn’t work.
The internet, mobile phones, buildings, energy, planes, trains and automobiles to name a few. None of them would exist without engineers and the engineering mindset to design, construct and maintain them.
So why do so many people get frustrated by engineers? And why doesn’t the everyone else – managers in particular – just accept than engineers know best?
This talk will examine the engineering mindset, what makes it great and why it causes problems.

Ideas to shape our AI future
Does the arrival of AI invalidate everything that has gone before? Or can we learn from the past?
If so, what might the past tell us about the how the future is being shaped? Where might we choose to shape it? And what role might agile have to play?
In this presentation Allan Kelly will get out his crystal ball to look into the past so we can look into the future; he will discuss how how work needs to be shaped and how ideas from the agile movement are still relevant.
The pace of change has never been so fast, as they say.
But does that mean that everything that has come before is invalidated?
Can we learn from previous technology change?
And can we extrapolate from what we know to what might be?
If you listen to Sam Altman it can seem the future is already determined, in his favour. But that would be to deny freewill and agency.
The future is not written, individuals and society have choices. Which also means that there are many experiments to be run. We need to learn what works, what works best and what we are prepared to accept.
